High Energy Synchrotron Diffraction

چکیده
High energy synchrotron diffraction is introduced as a new method for residual stress analysis in the bulk of materials. It is shown that energy dispersive measurements are sufficiently precise so that strains as small 10-4 can be determined reliably. Due to the high intensity and the high parallelism of the high energy synchrotron radiation the sample gauge volume can be reduced to approximately 50 urn X 1 mm X 1 mm compared to gauge volume of one mm3 up to several mm3 achievable by neutron diffraction. The benefits of the high penetration depth and the small gauge volume are demonstrated by the results of stress studies performed on a fiber reinforced ceramic, a functional gradient material and a metal-ceramic compound. Furthermore, it is shown that in case of a cold extruded metal specimen the energy dispersive measurement technique yields simultaneous information about texture and residual stresses and thus allows a detailed investigation of elastic and plastic deformation gradients.

Spatial resolution limits for synchrotron-based spectromicroscopy in the mid- and near-infrared.
Spatial resolution tests were performed on beamline 1.4.4 at the Advanced Light Source in Berkeley, CA, USA, a third-generation synchrotron light source. This beamline couples the high-brightness synchrotron source to a Thermo-Electron Continumicrom XL infrared microscope. Two types of resolution tests were performed in both the mid-IR and near-IR. The results are compared with a diffraction-li...

Residual stresses are formed due to inhomogeneous deformation gradients or temperature ®elds during the manufacturing and processing of components. In superposition with load stresses, they severely in ̄uence the strength and failure of components. For the non-destructive evaluation of the residual stresses in crystalline materials, well-developed angle dispersive methods for X-ray residual stre...

Introduction We describe a new diffraction technique for Combined Angleand Energy-dispersive Structural Analysis and Refinement (CAESAR), which collects angle-dispersive data by scanning a solid-state detector (SSD) with white synchrotron radiation. We demonstrate the feasibility by analyzing data collected on αAl2O3 at ambient conditions using the Rietveld technique, with varying schemes of da...
